Fixing a Fatal Error After Updating SureRank

Occasionally a site logs a PHP fatal error around the time SureRank updates. An error logged exactly during an update can be transient, and this article explains how to tell that case apart from one that needs action.

Important: Take a full backup of your site before starting any of the troubleshooting steps below.

Why an Error Can Appear During an Update

When WordPress updates a plugin it replaces the plugin files on disk. For a brief moment some files are missing or only partly written. If a visitor loads a page during that window, PHP cannot find a class it expects and logs an error such as:

PHP Fatal error: Uncaught Error: Class "SureRank\Inc\Sitemap\Xml_Sitemap" not found

If the update completed normally, the error stops once the new files are in place.

How to Check Whether the Update Was the Cause

  1. Note the exact timestamp in the error log entry.
  2. Go to Plugins → Installed Plugins and check SureRank’s current version.
  3. Compare the timestamp against when that version was installed, or when auto-updates run on your site.
  4. Reload your site and your admin dashboard to confirm both load normally.

A single entry that lines up with an update, on a site that now loads normally, usually needs no further action.

When to Investigate Further

Treat the error as something to fix if any of the following are true.

  • It repeats at times when nothing was being updated.
  • Your site or admin shows a white screen or a critical error notice.
  • The update did not finish cleanly, for example it timed out or was interrupted.

What a Missing Function or Class Tells You

The name in the error message points you in different directions.

  • A PHP or extension function, such as one beginning mb_, usually means a PHP extension is unavailable on the server. See SureRank Server Requirements.
  • A SureRank class or function usually means a file is missing or the installed files do not match each other, for example an interrupted update, or SureRank and SureRank Pro on versions that do not pair.

What to Do If It Persists

  1. Go to Plugins → Installed Plugins and confirm SureRank and SureRank Pro are both on their latest versions.
  2. Reinstall or update SureRank so any incomplete or mismatched files are replaced with a clean copy. This is safer than deactivating and reactivating, which does not replace files.
  3. Ask your host to flush any PHP opcode cache such as OPcache, which can keep serving a stale file list after an update.
  4. Clear your page cache and any CDN cache.
  5. Retest the page that produced the error.

Troubleshooting

  • The same error keeps repeating – Any of three things can cause this: an update that did not complete, SureRank and SureRank Pro on mismatched versions, or a stale opcode cache. Work through them in that order.
  • The error mentions a SureRank Pro class – Check that the free plugin is on a version at least as new as Pro requires. Pro depends on the free plugin and expects a matching version.
  • The error only appears on the front end – Clear your page cache and CDN cache, then load the page again with the cache bypassed.
  • You cannot reach the admin at all – Rename the surerank folder in wp-content/plugins over SFTP to deactivate it, then log in and reinstall the plugin.

Next Steps

If the error keeps appearing outside update windows, send us the full log entry including the timestamp and stack trace so we can trace it.
