How SureRank Chooses the Social (Open Graph) Image and How to Override It

When a page is shared on Facebook, X, or another platform that reads Open Graph tags, SureRank has to decide which image to show. This doc explains the exact order SureRank checks, and where to set or override each option.

The Priority Order

For a regular post or page, SureRank checks the following, in order, and uses the first one it finds:

  1. A manually-set social image for that page (or an AI-generated image, if one was created; it’s saved the same way).
  2. The page’s featured image (post thumbnail).
  3. The first image found in the page’s content.
  4. The site-wide Default Social Image, set once for the whole site.
  5. If none of the above exist, no image is included in the page’s social tags.

The home page has a slightly different chain. It first checks a dedicated Home Page Social Image setting, then falls through to the same site-wide Default Social Image if that isn’t set.

Setting a Per-Page Override

  1. Open the page or post in the editor.
  2. Open the SureRank panel and go to the Social tab.
  3. Under the Facebook (or X) sub-tab, upload an image in the Social Image field.

This takes priority over the featured image, content image, and site-wide default for that page.

Setting the Site-Wide Default

  1. Go to WordPress Dashboard → SureRank → General → Social.
  2. Upload an image under Default Social Image.

This image is used as the last-resort fallback for any page that has no manual image, no featured image, and no usable image in its content.

Setting the Home Page’s Image Separately

  1. Go to WordPress Dashboard → SureRank → General → Home Page → Social.
  2. Upload an image specifically for the home page.

This overrides the site-wide Default Social Image for the home page only.

Image Requirements

  • Recommended size: 1200 × 630 px.
  • Supported formats: JPG, PNG, GIF, WebP, AVIF.
  • If SureRank pulls an image automatically from a page’s content (fallback #3 above), it must be between 200×200px and 2000×2000px to qualify. Images outside that range are skipped in favor of the next fallback.

Expected Outcome

Sharing the page on Facebook or X shows the expected image based on the priority order above. Testing with Facebook’s Sharing Debugger or a similar tool confirms exactly which image and tags are being read.

FAQ

Q: I set a featured image but a different image shows when I share the page. Why? A: Check whether a manual social image was set on that page’s Social tab. A manually-set image, including an AI-generated one, always takes priority over the featured image.

Q: Does the site logo ever get used as the social image? A: No. The site logo is used for schema/knowledge panel markup, not as a fallback for the social share image.

Q: Why isn’t any image showing when I share a page? A: That page has no manual image, no featured image, no usable image in its content, and no site-wide Default Social Image set. Set at least one of these to fix it.
